Our nation is hurting following the killing of George Floyd, the latest tragedy in the long history of racial oppression and injustice targeting people of color in the United States. We believe it is incumbent upon every American to speak out against injustice. As organizations serving military and veteran families, our obligation to provide leadership, solidarity, and hope is even higher.
We reaffirm our commitment to the shared values of military service: honor, respect, integrity, and courage. We pledge to:
-
Protect the fundamental rights of all Americans;
-
Provide the equal opportunity of a bright, hopeful future for every American;
-
Devote our service to justice, so that all may live safely, secure in the knowledge that our military members are willing to give their lives to defend our freedoms and rights.
When faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, we rise up and we overcome. It is what our country does, it is what the members of our military and their families do, and what our organizations pledge to do.
We stand in solidarity and in support with those who are grieving and those who are exercising their right to free speech. At the same time, we condemn those few who use peaceful protest as cover for violence, destruction or harm. We ask our men and women in service, our veterans, their caregivers, and their families to continue to lead by example in pursuit of equal justice, equal opportunity, and freedom for all.
Signed,
